Armor trims are applied at a Smithing Table with a smithing template, the armor piece and a material. Each template drops from a specific structure (or, for Tide, from an Elder Guardian).

The material sets the trim color. When it matches the armor (diamond on diamond, iron on iron), the game switches to a darker palette so the pattern still shows.
Smithing templates are single use, and a few of them (Silence, Ward and Flow) take a real expedition to find. Pick the armor, pattern and material for each piece and the 3D model updates with the real in-game textures and palettes, including the darker palette vanilla uses when a trim matches its own armor material.
Every combination exports as a Java Edition /give command in the 1.21 item component format (trim={pattern, material}). Mixed sets get one command per piece, and “Enchanted” adds Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending and the best enchantments for each piece.

There are 18 trim patterns and 11 trim materials, giving 198 looks per armor type. Across the seven trimmable armors (chainmail, iron, gold, copper, diamond, netherite and turtle shell) that’s 1386 combinations, before mixing a different trim on each piece.
Everything except leather, which you dye instead: chainmail, iron, gold, copper, diamond, netherite and the turtle shell. The trim stays when you upgrade diamond armor to netherite.
Build your look in the generator and copy the command for a piece (or all of them at once). Paste it into chat on a world with cheats enabled, or into a command block if it’s longer than the chat limit. It works on Java Edition 1.21 and later; with enchantments, from 1.21.5.
When the trim material matches the armor material, such as diamond on diamond or netherite on netherite, Minecraft switches to a darker palette so the pattern still shows against the armor. It’s meant to look subtle: pick a contrasting material if you want it to stand out.
No, the template is consumed when you apply a trim. You can duplicate it at a crafting table with seven diamonds, the template itself and one block of the material its structure is made of (for example cobblestone for Sentry).
